"Big River" a musical adaptation of Mark Twain's classic 1884 novel, opens tonight, Feb. 20th at HCTO. Huckleberry Finn, a Missouri boy, hates the "civilized" life, and decides to fake his death and live on his own. However, Huck's retreat is cut short when he runs into Jim, a run-away slave. Fearing capture, the two set off on a raft down the Mississippi River in search of freedom. A musical based on Mark Twain's big-hearted American adventure of self-discovery and true friendship.

Most of the cast in "Big River" play multiple roles. In a departure from the HCTO norm, the cast doubles as the orchestra and will play live music for the show. The score features music in the bluegrass and country styles in keeping with the setting of the novel.

"Big River" opened on Broadway in 1985 and ran for over 1000 performances. It won the Tony Award that year for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score.

Christopher Clark directs with Justin Bills as Music Director and Jennifer Hill-Barlow as Choreographer. The design team includes Bobby Swenson (scenic design), MaryAnn Hill (costumes), Janna Larsen (hair & make-up), Cody Swenson (lighting) and Cody Hale (sound).

Tickets range in price from $17 - $21 each ($4 or $5 less for children). To order tickets visit the Hale Center Theater Orem Box Office, call 801-226-8600 or visit HaleTheater.org.

"Big River" will run nightly (except Sundays) from February 20 - April 12, 2014. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday matinees begin at 3:00 p.m. each week.

Due in part to the generous support of the Orem City CARE program HCTO is able to provide three weekday matinees of "Big River" at minimal cost for local students. These are scheduled for March 5, 12, and 19. Those interested in tickets should call Larene Tinney in the box office at 801-226-8600.
