As part of the UtahPresents 2017-18 Season, Doug Varone and Dancers, with special guests Ririe-Woodbury Dance company and the U's School of Dance, will perform at Marriott Center for Dance on the University of Utah campus on Friday, February 23, and Saturday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30, with a $5 U of U student ticket and a $10 ticket for all other students, and are available at utahpresents.org or by calling 801-581-7100.
Award-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone's work is known for its emotional range, kinetic breadth and the diversity of genres in which he works. Along with dancers from the U's School of Dance, Varone's acclaimed company will perform an intensely intimate new work, in the shelter of the fold, exploring the questioning inherent in faith.
The evening also features a guest performance by Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, whose artistic director Daniel Charon danced in Varone's company for ten seasons. Dancers from Ririe-Woodbury will perform Strict Love, which the company has performed in past seasons. And, Charon will perform Short Story with Natalie Desch, who has performed with both Doug Varone and Ririe-Woodbury and is currently teaching at the University of Utah, Westminster College and several other dance schools.
In addition, Doug Varone will perform a solo work, titled Two Piano Pieces, and his company will perform LUX.
The 2017/18 season marks the Company's 31st year. Since its founding in 1986, Doug Varone and Dancers has commanded attention for its expansive vision, versatility, and technical prowess. On the concert stage, in opera, theater and on the screen, Varone's kinetically thrilling dances make essential connections and mine the complexity of the human spirit. From the smallest gesture to full-throttle bursts of movement, Varone's work can take your breath away.
