As a young teenager, Sandra Turley saw the musical "LES MISERABLES" and knew that someday she wanted to perform in that production. Her substantial acting and vocal chops eventually landed her the role of Cosette on Broadway and she was also able to play Cosette with the venerable Colm Wilkinson in Shanghai, China. Wilkinson originated the leading role of Jean Valjean in the London and Broadway productions of the famous Victor Hugo story.
"It was such a pleasure and high point in my career," she says. "He was a gentleman on and off stage yet had a powerhouse of presence combined with a tenderness that fit his character."
Turley will be traveling from her home back east to Utah for a holiday visit, and is extending her time in the area to perform at SCERA Center for the Arts on Saturday, January 10 @ 7:00pm. SCERA audiences may have seen her sing several years ago with Dallyn Bayles, where she won over the sold-out crowd with her charm and personality.
"I really loved the audience the last time I was there," she explains. "They were so ready to listen and hear mature music. I found them to be cultured and very kind."
Reserved-seat tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children (age 3-11 and seniors (age 65 and older). They can be purchased at www.scera.org, by calling (801) 225-ARTS, or at main office at SCERA Center, 745 South State, Orem, open 10am-6pm weekdays and Saturdays from 12Noon-6pm.
Turley's background always included music. She grew up in Connecticut in a musical home where she pursued voice lessons and auditioned for shows. When it was time to apply for college, she opted for Brigham Young University where she performed in the music/dance/theatre program and learned about theatre.
She persisted and auditioned for Broadway production of "LES MISERABLES." She was cast in the major role of Cosette, a role she played for more than three years. Other experience included playing Ariel in Disney World's production of "The Little Mermaid."
She has entertained crowds at Steve Young's Forever Young Foundation, at the 2004 Republican National Convention and nationwide at Deseret Book's popular "Time Out for Women" and "Time Out For Girls."
For her SCERA performance, Turley will perform selections from her two acclaimed albums, "On Broadway" and "Inside My Soul."
She says, "The concert offers a great variety of Broadway showtunes and sacred music. "I hope the audience will feel with their hearts and hear music that will stir them emotionally. We can all share that together."
