Utah Cultural Celebration Center presents three films exploring some of the issues and experiences of Utah's African and African-American communities.

Everyone is invited to all three films, the gallery exhibit tour, capoeira demonstration and all discussions free of charge.

Wisdom of Our Years: Produced by Phyllis Caruth, Wisdom of Our Years is an engaging documentary that uses first person narratives from seven elderly African-Americans, living in and experiencing racism in Utah through the 30s, 40s and 50s. Dr. Jennifer Williams Molock will give a tour of Utah's African Heritage: Storytelling through Art and Artifact at 6 p.m. prior to the screening. Co-sponsored by African-American Historical and Genealogical Society. A discussion will immediately follow the screening.

Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons reveals that legacy, and confronts the issues which surfaced during the most turbulent years of the Civil Rights Movement, when the LDS Church maintained its policy of restricting priesthood from those of African descent. Written and directed by Margaret Young and Darius gray. A discussion moderated by Don Harwell, President of The Genesis Group, will immediately follow the screening. Co-sponsored by KUED.

Capoeira: The Dance of Freedom explores the enigmatic culture of the Afro-Brazilian fight/dance of capoeira. Drawing from Brazilian and American scholars as well as capoeira masters, the culture of capoeira is explored from its fragmented history, its movements and songs, to its influence on American pop culture. A capoeira demonstration and discussion featuring local capoeiristas featured in the film will immediately follow the screening. Additionally, a demonstration for students will take place from 2 - 3 p.m. For reservations, please call Anna Cutler: 801-965-5103. Co-sponsored by Kingsbury Hall's "Dance Brazil" program.
