According to The Huffington Post, "Bill T. [Jones] has constantly pushed the envelope of what dance can be." His groundbreaking artistry seeps into the movement and voices of his lithe performers as the unconventional, honest and compassionate piece "Analogy/Dora: Tramontane" fills The Eccles Center stage on March 5. The Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 435-655-3114 or online at EcclesCenter.org.
The latest installment in a career marked by "works of art that reflect the turmoil at the center of our society" (The Patriot Ledger), "Analogy/Dora: Tramontane" tells the story of holocaust survivor, Dora Amelan (Jones' 95 year-old, mother-in-law) through dance, song and spoken word. A MacArthur Fellow and National Medal of Arts recipient, Jones interviewed Ms. Amelan, a French Jewish nurse and social worker and World War II survivor, to create this "extraordinary dance-theater piece." (NJ Arts).
Mimicking the interview format, the story unfolds in multiple levels of transformation. The threads of Dora's narrative sometimes parallel the choreography, sometimes overlap and sometimes exist in an enigmatic counterpoint. The nine dancers of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company move seamlessly between dancing, speaking and singing in the evening length work. The result is a meditation on perseverance, resourcefulness and resilience while suggesting the amorphous nature of memory.
Founded in 1982, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company was born out of an 11 year collaboration between Jones and the late Arnie Zane (1948-1988). Throughout its history, the company has frequently centered its pieces on social commentary and issues of identity. Jones, who has choreographed more than 140 works, has received extraordinary accolades, ranging from being named "An Irreplaceable Dance Treasure" by the Dance Heritage Coalition to winning a 2010 Tony Award for Best Choreography for Broadway critically acclaimed musical "FELA!" The company's "excellent" (New York Times) dancers combine grace, strength and artistry as the choreography "flows with an engaging slipperiness between being illustrative and formally abstract."
