Hale Centre Theatre's production of OKLAHOMA is probably unlike any you've seen--in a good way. If the musical appeals to you, you won't find much that could be improved.

OKLAHOMA (music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II) is a landmark in the history of musical theatre. It presents the simple, beloved story of Laurey and her choice between two very different suitors, as well as her friend, Ado Annie, and her own choice between two suitors who are just as different.

Directed and choreographed by David Tinney, this production focuses on the characters and their relationships, creating an authentic feeling by digging into the history and dramatic themes. The highlight of the show is the dream sequence that closes the first act. Intense staging, choreography, lighting, and acting contribute to an absolutely gripping experience.

Camille Van Wagoner leads the cast with a lovely strength as Aunt Eller (double cast with LizAnne Chapman). Derek Smith is in wonderful voice as Curly Maclain (double cast with Adam Dietlein), and Ashley Gardner Carlson offers a superb new take on the character of Laurey Williams (double cast with Elise Groves).

Jacob Theo Squire is at once threatening and sympathetic as Jud Fry (single cast), Kelly Coombs is delightfully nutty as Ado Annie Carnes (double cast with Heather McDonald), Brock Dalgleish is lovably innocent as Will Parker (double cast with Jack Shapiro), and Andrew Hansen is a great comic foil as Ali Hakim (single cast).

In addition to the talented cast, the contributions of musical director Anne Puzey and sound designer Shane Steel add greatly to the enjoyment of the music.

The set design by Kacey Udy features a mix of down-to-earth and larger-than-life elements that complement the action on stage. The properties by Michelle Jensen, costumes by Tamara Baker, and lighting by Adam Flitton all contribute to a cohesive whole.

OKLAHOMA plays through October 3, 2015. For tickets, call the box office at 801-984-9000 or visit www.halecentretheatre.org.
