CASH ON DELIVERY! at Hale Centre Theatre's Jewel Box Theatre in Sandy delivers hilarity that builds until it reaches dizzying heights.
CASH ON DELIVERY! by Michael Cooney is about a landlord who has been receiving non-sanctioned handouts from the government due to his creative application submissions. As more and more people become involved in his scheme, and the lies become more and more complex, he is desperate to keep his charade going long enough to find a way out of the mess he has gotten himself into. With crisp banter and uproarious physical humor, the comedy is a winner.
The cast of this production is chock-full of comedic talent, with spot-on timing, believable British accents, and natural movement. Even when the situation becomes increasingly ridiculous, the performances are not too over-the-top.
Bryan Dayley as Eric Swann (double cast with Scott Christopher), Greg Larsen as Norman McDonald (double cast with Brandon Green), and Mark Fotheringham as Mr. Jenkins (double cast with Glen Carpenter) all impress in turn as they give realistic performances while at the same time inducing volumes of laughter.
Additional standout performers include Michelle Linn Hall as Linda Swann (double cast with Amy Stocking), George Anderson as Uncle George (double cast with Bradley Moss), and Margie Johnson as Sally Chessington (double cast with Liz Whittaker).
The staging and direction by Eric R. Jensen is superb and, as one of Hale Centre Theatre's first Proscenium Productions, never feels awkward.
The set by Dennis Hassan is glorious to behold as the entire cross-section of a house has been designed and built with every amazing 1990s decorative detail in place. It is seriously impressive. Every opportunity not afforded by the theatre's previous in-the-round setup has been taken full advantage of.
Barbara Harvey Abbott's wonderful 1990s costuming is a perfect complement to the scenic design as the setting almost becomes a character of its own.
CASH ON DELIVERY! plays through March 17, 2018. For tickets, call the box office at 801-984-9000 or visit www.hct.org.
