Continuing its season "The Best of Times is Now," The Ziegfeld Theater presents a limited run of La Cage aux Folles, the only Broadway musical to win the Tony for Best Revival twice, and precursor to the film The Birdcage.
It's beautiful St. Tropez in the glamorous 1970s, and the nights are lit by the flashing of sequence and brushing of feathers at the popular drag club, La Cage aux Folles. Run by Georges and headlined by his partner of twenty years, Albin (known onstage as Zaza), the two men receive an unwelcome shock when Georges' son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted politician. As the fathers attempt to portray a 'normal' family to their son's prospective in-laws, hilarity ensues with touching and love-affirming results.
Precursor to the well-known film The Birdcage, La Cage aux Folles remains one of the most revived, all time biggest hits of Broadway, with powerful ballads, rollicking show tunes, and romantic duets.
La Cage aux Folles is directed by Morgan Parry, music directed by Bonnie Beus Romney, and choreographed by Talese Hunt.
The Ziegfeld Theater continues its fourth season in 2016 with a musical comedy about families, love and acceptance. Under the executive leadership of Caleb and Morgan Parry and the artistic leadership of Rick Rea, the theater pursues a mission of "Professional Standard, Community Spirit" as it strives to bring quality entertainment to diverse audiences in Northern Utah.
La Cage aux Folles plays for a limited three week run. The opening gala and performance is Friday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. Regular performances are 7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, adding 7:30 p.m.Sunday performance on August 28 and 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinees August 27 and September 3.
