West Sacramento Community Theater Produces THE CODE OF WHISKEY KING, Auditions Held 7/25

West Sacramento Community Theater will produce an original musical, "The Code of Whiskey King" - music by Ken Kligerman, book and lyrics by Leo McElroy, directed by Tim Castleberry.

Auditions have been extended. All roles still open.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, July 25th at 10 a.m.
Location: Big Idea Theatre

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, a song and a dance routine. Come prepared with sheet music, as a pianist will be provided. You will be taught a short routine for the dance audition, so dress appropriately.

Rehearsals will begin July 27th, and will run Monday through Thursday. Most of the early singing rehearsals will take place in Loomis. By August, all rehearsals will be in West Sacramento.

The show will run four weeks, on Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoons starting October 2nd and closing October 24th (no Sunday show on the last weekend).
PLOT:

It is the 1870's in a small California mining town, where the Gold Rush is mostly just a memory. A stranger from the East comes looking for gold, but winds up staving off starvation by becoming the town telegrapher, unfazed by the town's lack of a telegraph line. Befriended by a Native American outcast and a young Chinese immigrant, he deals with blighted romance and rampant hostility, spiced with wry musical commentary on the life and times of the American West.

ROLES:

Abel, the "telegrapher," a con man who develops a conscience. Any ethnicity. Male, aged 30 and up. Sings a wide range of songs.
Charlie, the young Native American, angry and rebellious. Native American or Hispanic preferred.. Male, late teen or young adult. Sings.
George, the young Chinese immigrant, earnest and studious, speaks very good English. Asian preferred. Male, late teen oryoung adult. Sings. Tenor preferred.
Nan, the dance hall hostess and ex-schoolteacher, reluctant love interest. Any ethnicity. Female aged 30 and up. Sings a range of songs.
Mike, the town bully. Any ethnicity. Male, aged 30 and up. Sings. Baritone or Bass preferred.
Lovey, the saloon owner, a scheming boss. Any ethnicity. Female aged 40 and up. Sings.
Item, a young saloon girl, defiant at times but unhappy with her life. Any ethnicity. Female young adult. Sings.

All other roles potentially sing some lines or take part in group songs:
Uncle Victor, the aging, ineffectual town sheriff. Any ethnicity. Older male.
Yoak, a fussy, nasty shopkeeper. Any ethnicity. Male 40 plus.
Roger the Rounder, a gambler and ladies' man. Any ethnicity. Adult male.
Chief Striped Horse, an older Native American, dignified and wise. Native American or Hispanic preferred. Older male.
Jiggs, the bartender, earnest but not too bright. Any ethnicity. Adult male.
Peter, the saloon piano player. A few lines, Any ethnicity. Adult male.

Various saloon patrons, saloon hostesses, and townspeople. All ages and ethnicities.
