California Musical Theatre (CMT) President and CEO Richard Lewis announced that Scott Klier, currently Executive Producer and Chief Operating Officer, will become Producing Artistic Director as of December 1. Lewis said that Glenn Casale, CMT's Artistic Director since 2009, will transition into the role of Artistic Consultant and continue to direct shows at Sacramento Music Circus, as he's done for more than 20 years.
In his new role, Klier will take on the majority of Casale's Artistic Director responsibilities for Music Circus, including coordinating the annual casting process and providing overall artistic oversight. In addition to his directing assignments, Casale will provide overall artistic guidance and advise in the planning, casting and execution of the Music Circus season. Lewis will continue in his role of President and CEO.
"
California Musical Theatre has been extremely fortunate to have had a visionary like
Glenn Casale as our Artistic Director for the past eight years," said Lewis. "And we're happy that Glenn will continue to play a role in the artistic life of CMT and Music Circus. I'm also very pleased that a creative force like
Scott Klier will be assuming Glenn's responsibilities. With Scott's extensive theatrical experience, and long-time association with
California Musical Theatre, I'm confident that our future is bright."
"I direct shows all over the world and, without a doubt, Music Circus is my favorite place to work," said Casale. "Part of what makes it special is the opportunity I've had to collaborate with
Scott Klier. There's no better person to take over my Artistic Director duties. I look forward to continuing to work with Scott and to directing shows at Music Circus for many years to come."
"I have learned more working alongside CMT Artistic Director
Glenn Casale than I had in all my years prior," said Klier. "His theatrical instincts and generosity of spirit are unrivaled, and I am humbled and honored to continue our collaboration in this new role. I look forward to continuing my work at
California Musical Theatre in the hope of fostering new talent on and off stage; introducing new titles into the canon of audience-favorite shows; and sustaining the artistic excellence that
Glenn Casale established and our audience rightly expects."
A Sacramento native, Klier began a stage management career at Music Circus more than 25 years ago. He spent a decade in New York City, where he worked on the Broadway productions of
Sunset Boulevard, Disney's
Beauty and the Beast,
Annie Get Your Gun,
The Music Man and
Oklahoma!. Klier returned to Sacramento and
California Musical Theatre in 2003 to serve as the organization's Production Manager for six years prior to beginning his work as a producer. In his tenure, Klier has worked on more than 125
California Musical Theatre productions.
