The "Jellicle Cats" is a particular tribe of felines who live in London, each with vastly different lives. You get a sense of how different each cat is in the song "The Naming of Cats" when you find that each cat has three names by which they can be known (one of which is so secret it is known only to themselves).
On one fantastical night each year, they come together for the Jellicle Ball. We are allowed into the cats' secret life that special evening when one - and only one - of them will be chosen to go to the "Heaviside Layer" and be reborn as a new cat.
