More than 450 Elly nominees for the 2012-13 season were announced at an informal nomination reception on Sunday, August 11, 2013 beginning around 7pm. Actors, directors, technicians, and producers were on hand to listen excitedly for their names to be called. This year's theme was Anchors Away and the Black Box Theatre sported a nautical theme complete with sailor-dressed girls hawking raffle tickets. Guests also enjoyed appetizers, sparkling ciders and mini-cupcakes.
This past season 272 shows were submitted by 82 theatres! Fifty-eight (58) theatres and 123 productions received nominations. The 10 community theatres receiving the most nominations included: Sutter Street Theatre (44); Woodland Opera House (29); Sheldon High School (24); St. Francis High School (21); El Dorado High School (20); Runaway Stage Productions (19) and The Acting Company (17). Elly Award nominations include Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress, Director, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Set Design, Overall Production plus Musical Direction and Choreography, if applicable. The nominations are announced for productions in the following categories: Comedy, Drama, Musical, Original Works, Education- Musicals, Education- Plays, Young People's-Musicals and Young People's- Plays.
Named for the late Eleanor McClatchy, a devoted patron of the arts and former publisher of the Sacramento Bee, the Elly Awards celebrate excellence and the outstanding achievements of community theaters and artists in the greater Sacramento area. Created 31 years ago by local community actors, the Elly Awards have grown from a local Sacramento tradition to now include theatres within a 70-miles radius!
In celebration of the 31th annual Elly Awards, SARTA will be hosting two ceremonies this September! The Youth Elly Award ceremony will be on Sunday, September 8 at 7pm at Roseville Theatre Arts Academy. The Adult Elly Award ceremony will be on Sunday, September 22 at 7pm at the Red Lion Inn - Woodlake. Tickets go on sale August 12 at brownpapertickets.com.
