Novato Theater Company continues its 2017-208 season with Chicago, Broadway's longest-running American musical, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play about actual criminals and their crimes. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal". Chicago includes memorable songs like "All that Jazz," "When You're Good to Mama," and "All I Care About is Love."
The NTC production is directed and choreographed by Marilyn Izdebski, with musical direction by Debra Chambliss. It is produced by Electric Bill. Chicago runs October 19-November 12 at the NTC Playhouse, 5420 Nave Drive in Novato.
It's the trial of the century. Chicago features a dazzling and satirical look at fame, justice, and the media machine. Set in the 1920s, Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star who murders her lover and ends up in jail, where she meets her hero, double murderess and star Velma Kelly. Enter greedy and lustful superstar lawyer, Billy Flynn, and tensions come to a head as they vie for the spotlight.

Performance History of Chicago
The original Broadway production opened in 1975 and ran for 936 performances until 1977. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. Following a West End debut in 1979 which ran for 600 performances, Chicago was revived on Broadway in 1996, and a year later in London's West End. The Broadway revival holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind only The Phantom of the Opera, having played its 7,486th performance on November 23, 2014, surpassing Cats. The West End revival ran for nearly 15 years, becoming the longest-running American musical in West End history. The 2002 film version of the musical won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
