InConcert Sierra and Sierra Stages present SOUPER SUNDAY: A Benefit Fundraiser for Youth Arts Education Programs in Nevada County, Nov. 2 at 2:00 PM (Doors open at 1:30 PM) at Miners Foundry Cultural Center, 325 Spring Street, Nevada City, CA

Tickets: $35 adult; $20 youth (age 17 and under)

What do "Manicotti, Matzo balls, chimichanga, wiener schnitzel, and succotash" have in common? Find out on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at "SOUPER SUNDAY" - A benefit for the arts education outreach programs of InConcert Sierra and Sierra Stages! Enjoy the only public performance of the original children's musical "STONE SOUP" written by InConcert Sierra Artistic Director Ken Hardin, based on the popular Russian folk tale, followed by a late light lunch of delicious soups and fresh breads, and including fun auctions and raffles.

In "STONE SOUP", a hungry traveling magician stumbles upon a poor village under the control of the greedy Mayor Pocketbottom. The 'magic' traveler, Spinner, enchants the townspeople (who also include Miss Whimsey, Ms. Drizzle, Mr. Bleek and Ms. Grumpet), and together they create a delicious soup for the entire village from just one stone! It's a heartfelt story of sharing, cooperation and helping others!

Sierra Stages and Miners Foundry presented an informal reading of "STONE SOUP" as part of their "Theater by the Book" play reading series last season. Those attending the reading enjoyed the musical immensely, and several individuals requested a full production.

This fall, Sierra Stages is touring a full production of "STONE SOUP" to four local elementary schools: Chicago Park School, Scotten School, Union Hill School, and Ready Springs School. The production will play to an estimated total of 1200 school children, and will be the first time many have experienced live musical theatre performed by adult actors. To enhance the experience, director Susan Mason put together a Study Guide for teachers to use with their students before seeing the production. Mason said, "I hope the production will provide ideas to generate conversation about how we can listen to the needs of others and help provide for those less fortunate in our own community."

"SOUPER SUNDAY," will be the only chance for the general public to see the full production of this enchanting musical. The cast includes Casey Burke, Nancy Haffey, Jeffrey Mason, Susan Mason, Helena O'Dell, Keith Porter, and Kim Wellman. Musical direction is by Ken Getz, set is by Pam Hodges and costumes are by Eileen Beaver. For "SOUPER SUNDAY," the cast will be joined by Ken Hardin, piano and Steve Nicholson, bass.

"I wrote the music and lyrics for "STONE SOUP" while on the faculty of CSU Northridge in the early 1980's where it was produced and toured as part of their 'theater for children program.' I'm excited to see it come back to life," said Hardin. "This event is perfect for audiences of all ages and a "souper" fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Bring along your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews!"

InConcert Sierra and Sierra Stages are collaborating on this project as two local non-profit arts presenters in Nevada County. The proceeds from "SOUPER SUNDAY" will help bring "STONE SOUP" to the four local elementary schools free of charge to the schools and the students, and will help Sierra Stages and InConcert Sierra enhance their respective educational offerings, which include free and discounted tickets to young audiences, scholarships, and in-school and field trip concerts/performances.

"SOUPER SUNDAY" festivities begin at 2:00 PM (Doors open at 1:30 PM) at the historic Miners Foundry Cultural Center, 325 Spring Street, in Nevada City. Tickets for the fundraiser are $35 ($20 for youth age 17 & under), and are available in person at BriarPatch Co-op Community Market, any InConcert Sierra or Sierra Stages event, and online at www.InConcertSierra.org.

"SOUPER SUNDAY" is being sponsored by Keith and Shirley Porter, Dr. John and Valarie Bush, and Jerry and Linda Maloney.
