Starring real-life couple Matthew Ashford (of NBC's "Days of Our Lives") and Christina Saffran Ashford, I Do! I Do! opens at Sacramento Music Circus August 16-21. With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt (the team behind The Fantasticks), I Do! I Do! will delight audience members of all ages.
I Do! I Do! opened on Broadway in 1966 and was produced by David Merrick and directed by Gower Champion, both Broadway legends. It starred Mary Martin and Robert Preston. The production was nominated for 7 Tony awards, including Best Musical. Regionally, I Do! I Do! ran for over 22 years (7,645 performances) at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre in Minnesota from 1971 to 1993. The actors, David Anders & Susan Goeppinger, who starred as the married couple in the show for the entire run got married themselves 18 months into the production! The coincidental story was covered by People Magazine and newspapers throughout the country.
I Do! I Do! is based on Jan De Hartog's play The Fourposter. From wedding night jitters, having children, quarrels, mid-life crises to old age, 50 years of love and marriage is at the center of this intimate musical theatre work set to a tuneful, charming score by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, including the pop hit "My Cup Runneth Over."
