Harris Center Sets the Story of Anne Frank to Dance Image

Created to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Anne Frank's deportation, this moving production begins after the liberation of Auschwitz. Anne's father, the only survivor of the Frank family, returns to the Secret Annex where he receives his daughter's diary from Miep Gies. While reading it, he discovers aspects of her personality that he did not expect. A work of extraordinary beauty and grace at the hands of Italy's ImPerfect Dancers Company, an eight-member contemporary dance troupe celebrating its 10th Anniversary.

The performance contains brief nudity that is appropriate to the general themes of the work.

ImPerfect Dancers Company offers an excellent teacher's guide for Anne Frank Words From The Shadows; contact Paul Dorn at 916-608-6820 for a copy.

The diary of Anne Frank invites us to think about the dark period in our history, seen through the eyes of an adolescent. It warns of the dangers of intolerance. As Primo Levi, writer and Auschwitz survivor noted "One single Anne Frank moves us more than the countless others who suffered just as she did but whose faces have remained in the shadows. Perhaps it is better that way; if we were capable of taking in all the suffering of all those people, we would not be able to live. "Anne Frank, parole dall'ombra" (Anne Frank Words From The Darkness) is dedicated to Anne Frank, and was made to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of her arrest and deportation.

Such important content is in good hands with Italy's ImPerfect Dancers Company.

Italy ImPerfect dancers made their U.S. debut Saturday with a forceful performance alternatively fueled by deep feeling (Washington Post).

Company founder Walter Matteini graduated from the Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome, and went on to dance for some of the most renowned Italian and international companies including the Balletto di Roma, the Op ra National de Lyon and others. Among the top names in contemporary dance with whom he has worked are Jir Kylian, William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Angelin Preljocaj, Birgitte Cullberg, Claude Brumachon, Maguy Marin, Bill T Jones, Jacopo Godani and many others. Co-Director and Co-Choreographer Ina Broeckx, a native of Belgium, has had an extraordinary career throughout Europe and is the Company's costume and set designer.

What makes the company so uniquely different is its conscious diversity. As dancers and human beings we all start from imperfection, while constantly striving for the unattainable: individual and collective perfection. It is this paradox that is encapsulated in the company's name.

In just five years, the Company has regularly toured throughout Europe [Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Belgium], and has taken its passionate and intensely physical repertoire to Africa, South America, Canada and the US, performing at Festival de danse de Cannes, Benefit Gala for the Alzheimer Stuttgart, Tanz-Tage Festival Regensburg, Kultur Tempel Festival Karlsruhe, Chutzpah Festival Vancouver, Cali International Dance Festival, Visa2Dance Tanzania, just to name a few. ImPerfect Dancers Company has been the resident dance company of the Pisa Opera and Ballet Theatre in Italy since the 2011 season.
