The B Street Theatre proudly opens its 2013-2014 B3 Series season with Aaron Posner's stirring new play My Name is Asher Lev, based on Chaim Potok's beloved novel. Like Other Desert Cities, which opens on the B Street Mainstage August 18th, My Name is Asher Lev recently earned the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. Now, with Asher Lev opening in September, Sacramento audiences will have a limited opportunity to see both of Off-Broadway's most popular and acclaimed new plays this fall.

Writers Potok and Posner paint a potent picture of one artist's coming-of-age in this passionate new play. Growing up in a small Hasidic community in 1950's Brooklyn, Asher Lev cannot help but express the quiet anguish pulsing through his home in his own highly controversial style. As his family and community demand complete adherence to religious tradition, Asher must struggle to reconcile his remarkable artistic gifts with the austerity and singular devotion his faith requires. Aaron Posner's adaptation of My Name is Asher Lev originally premiered at the acclaimed Arden Theatre Co. in Philadelphia in 2009 after being work-shopped at PlayPenn in 2007. The former artistic director of Arden Theatre Co. also adapted Chaim Potok's Newbery Award-winning novel The Chosen.

My Name is Asher Lev runs Sept. 20 - Oct. 20 at B Street Theatre. Tickets are $23-35, with $5 student rush available. Tickets to the preview performance are $15. To order, visit http://www.bstreettheatre.org.
