B STREET'S 2018 SEASON AT THE SOFIA
The Mainstage season will open in the Thrust Theatre with the Sacramento premiere of Richard Bean's raucous comedy One Man, Two Guvnors (Jan. 30 - March 4). Producing Artistic Director Buck Busfield will direct.
Next up will be Sarah Burgess' incendiary comic-drama Dry Powder (March 27 - April 15).
The West Coast Premiere of Chelsea Marcantel's Airness (May 8 - June 10) will be next. This piece received its World Premiere at the 2017 Humana Festival of New American Plays and it profiles the lives of professional Air Guitar players with a hilarious cast of characters.
The summer will kick-off with the revival of B Street's smash-hit The Ladies Foursome (June 19 - July 22) by Norm Foster. Artistic Producer Dave Pierini will direct. The upstairs space will feature B Street's inaugural New Works Festival (June 26 - July 1) with the audience selecting a new work from the festival to be produced in B Street's 2019 season.
Next up will be the West Coast Premiere of Basil Kreimendahl's We're Gonna Be Okay (Aug. 7 - Sept. 9). In this piece, two neighboring families struggle to face the shifting landscape of the Cold War when they are forced to build bomb shelters below their homes.
The following show will be Ironbound by Martyna Majok (Sept. 25 - Oct. 28). The story of a Polish immigrant who lands in New Jersey and makes her way through America in hopes of being reunited with her son.
The Mainstage season will conclude with Matthew Lopez's The Legend of Georgia McBride (Nov. 6 - Dec. 9), a heartwarming comedy about a failed Elvis impersonator turned drag queen.
The B Street Theatre will offer a four-show Family Series Season in their new, 365 seat Sutter Theatre for Children.
The Family Series Season will begin with the American Premiere of Gandhi: The Musical (Feb. 19 - March 11). This theatrical sensation received its World Premiere last summer in Mumbai and profiles the life, struggles and success of India's Father, Mahatma Gandhi. B Street will invite book and lyrics writer, Danesh Khambata and composer Nariman Khambata to serve as Artists in Residence during the rehearsal process. Artistic Producer Lyndsay Burch will direct.
Next up will be Le Clanche Du Rand's theatrical adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (April 9 - April 29).
The revival of Jerry R. Montoya's Treasure Island (Oct. 15 - Nov. 4) will be next. B Street produced the world premiere of Montoya's Treasure Island on the Family Series Stage in 2005.
The Family Series Season will conclude with Producing Artistic Director, Buck Busfield's adaptation of A Christmas Carol (Nov. 30 - Dec. 30). Busfield's adaptation is complete with door-slamming farce, self-aware satire and the traditional heartwarming holiday cheer.
As a Core Member of the National New Play Network, B Street remains committed to workshopping and producing new works. They will feature the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of Ken Weitzman's Halftime with Don in their upstairs venue during September of 2018.
When it opens in February 2018, The Sofia will be home to B Street Theatre's Mainstage (naming opportunity available) and the Sutter Theatre for Children - California's first year-round, professional theatre for children. In the same spirit of community from which B Street Theatre was born, Sutter Theatre will open its doors to host the performances and events of local artists, community organizations, and visiting acts. In effect, this landmark facility will become an entertainment hub for all of Sacramento, where locals and tourists alike can see theatre, comedy, dance, or musical acts in an intimate, professional space every night of the year. In addition, its large public lobby, classrooms, open-air courtyard, and on-site restaurant make The Sofia a true destination.
