The poor and shy Nemorino is hopelessly in love with the rich and beautiful Adina. One day he hears her reading aloud the story of Tristan and Isolde. Believing in the existence of a love potion, he turns to Dulcamara – a quack trading in panaceas for all kinds of illnesses – and the latter sells him wine as an elixir of love. The village girls discover that Nemorino is about to become an heir and begin to flirt with him, but to no avail. The naive youth sees the reason behind their behaviour as an effect of the love potion. At the same time, Adina gives her consent to marry Sergeant Belcore whose regiment has stopped in the village. In order to earn some money and purchase more of the love potion, Nemorino enlists in the regiment. Touched by the youth’s sincere love, Adina redeems his recruit’s agreement and consents to marry him.
