The whole family will erupt into fits of laughter when you take them to see Beetlejuice, JR. Based on the beloved 1988 Tim Burton film, the musical tells the story of a goth teenager who’s life turns upside down when she meets a recently deceased couple and a ghost-with-the-most determined to spread chaos and mayhem in the living world. Featuring a contemporary musical theater score, the lyrics are filled with clever jokes and comedic punchlines. Six feet under its uproarious surface, Beetlejuice, JR is “a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!” (–beetlejuicebroadway.com) You won’t want to miss this frightfully funny Netherworld of pandemonium!
The cult classic film first got it’s taste at becoming a Broadway musical in 2014 when Eddie Prefect began writing songs for a musical adaptation. After a successful out of town tryout at the National Theater in Washington D.C., Beetlejuice opened on Broadway in 2019 at the Winter Garden Theater. The show was nominated for eight Tony Awards that season, before being shut down less than a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As one of the first Broadway shows to really lean into its dedicated social media following, the show was able to continue fostering connection with its fans during the shut down by hosting virtual costume contests and fan art contests. When Broadway re-opened eighteen months later, Beetlejuice fans demanded the show be brought back for an encore, this time at the Marquis Theatre, with much of its original cast returning for the run. Created specifically for the generation that made it a hit, Beetlejuice JR. is a wacky theatrical party filled with unabashed humor and emotional honesty.
"Lydia resonates with younger audiences because she is wholly realized as a Gen Z protagonist: clever, socially aware, reasonably nihilistic and emotionally honest. Lydia is pragmatic, clear-eyed and merely misunderstood, a feeling any younger theatergoer likely knows well.” — The LA Times
