Maltby and Shire's Closer Than Ever

Music by David Shire
Lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr.

September 11-13, 2015

A riveting song cycle exploring the everyday struggles of love in the modern world.

A look into the private song vault of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire (Big, Starting Here, Starting Now, Baby), the song cycle Closer Than Ever is filled to the brim with the brilliance for which these musical theatre giants are known.

Closer Than Ever is a nonstop exploration of everyday struggles in the "modern world." Topics ranging from unrequited adoration... to aging... to Muzak are tackled with resounding sincerity and precisely placed hilarity. Each song is a unique story told by a new character taking audiences not only into the songbook of Mr. Maltby & Mr. Shire, but into the minds of the individuals facing these completely relatable challenges.

The Closer Than Ever cast consists of local Westchester County favorites including Jennie Berkson, Katie Leukens Chan-Chee, Vincent Di Geronimo and Steve Taylor with musical direction by Kurt Kelley and directed by Broadway Veteran John Treacy Egan.

"Step aside, all you apple-cheeked newspaper boys and American idiots, you little mermaids and littler orphans. The grown-ups have something to say!" -New York Times, Critic's Pick

"Top-notch 'Closer' goes the distance! If you can't find something to relate to here, you simply haven't lived or loved... warmth and wisdom resonate throughout. A spot-on foursome of actors skillfully navigates the tonal shifts of this alternately funny, poignant and insightful show! Terrific!" -New York Post

"First rate! Magically comical... I just fell in love with it! This show is bigger than its four-person cast and we're closer than ever to believing in tomorrow because of it!" -Liz Smith

"Hilarious! Packed with emotion, the sort that sneaks up on you when you're not expecting it! Classy! Marvelous!" -Huffington Post

Tickets: $25 & $30

White Plains Jazz Fest presents the Grammy-nominated Brazilian Trio of Helio Alves (piano), Nilson Matta (bass) and Duduka Da Fonseca (drums); with Maucha Adnet (vocals) and Mark Morganelli (flugelhorn).

Brazilian Trio is a masterful amalgamation of musician/composer/arranger friends dedicated to perpetuating the artful blend of Brazilian classical music and jazz. The trio consists of pianist Helio Alves, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. Their 2009 debut CD, Forests, netted them a coveted Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album right off the bat, validating their musical mission with passion and appreciation. For their eagerly awaited sophomore follow up, the Trio has moved to Motema Music for Constelação (pronounced "cohn stay lah sow" - "constellation" in Portuguese). Divinely showcasing each player with an original composition apiece plus uniquely engaging renditions of fine pieces ranging from Brazilian composers such as Tenorio Jr. and the great Antonio Carlos Jobim to jazz stalwart Cedar Walton, the 10-song album picks up from where the earthy Forests left off...and gracefully ascends skyward. This music is deep enough to impress connoisseurs of Brazilian music while appealing to casual music lovers that simply adore the sound of beautiful masterfully rendered tunes.
