Bassoonist Janice Grice performs "Tangos, Serenades and Choros," an innovative program of music by Latin American composers on Hoff-Barthelson Music School's HB Artist Series on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 5:00 pm at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale. Joining Ms. Grice will be guest artists Kevin Willois, flute; Fernanda Canaud, piano and HBMS faculty member Glenn Rhian, percussion.
Included on the program are performances of Rui Dos Ries' Tanganera Astoriana (2015) for bassoon and piano; an arrangement by Francisca Aquino of Ernesto Nazareth's Odeon (1910); Valsa Seresta by Hilda Reis; Astor Piazzolla's Otoño Poteño (1969) arranged for bassoon, flute and piano by Jose Bragata; Paquita D'Rivera's Preludio y Merengue (2003) arranged for bassoon, flute and piano by Franca D'Rivera and Pablo Zinger; and Santa Morena (1954) by Jacob do Bandolim, arranged by Janice Grice. Program subject to change.
Admission to the recital is $18, $15 for seniors (65+) and free of charge to HBMS students and students 18 years of age and younger. About Janet Grice:
Janet Grice, bassoonist, has researched Brazilian and Latin American music for the bassoon with a Fulbright Fellowship in Brazil, for her Rutgers University Doctoral Thesis, and with her group Vento Trio. Her studies also include a master's degree from New York University and a bachelor's degree from New England Conservatory. Both an improviser and classically trained bassoonist, she has performed with the jazz ensembles of Karl Berger, Butch Morris, Mingus Orchestra, as well as the STX Ensemble Xenakis, Chappaqua Orchestra, Londrina Symphony (Brazil) and freelance ensembles. Her discography includes Music Minus One, three CDs of Brazilian jazz, and projects with artists including Leroy Jenkins, John Lurie, Eve Beglarian and Bernie Worell. She has appeared as a performer at the Lake George Jazz Weekend, Celebrate Brooklyn, Sounds of Brazil, 92nd Street Y, Jazz Forum Arts, International Double Reed Society conferences, the Festival de Música de Londrina in Brazil, and Fou de Basson in France. She currently directs the instrumental music program at Fordham High School for the Arts in the Bronx, New York.
