Students from the Jazz Studies Program of Hoff-Barthelson Music School will perform a program of original and jazz standards in Scarsdale's Chase Park, 32 Chase Road, Scarsdale, on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 5:00 pm. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be held at the Music School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale.
"All That Jazz" features several of the Music School's student jazz ensembles performing a variety of jazz standards, the music of Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. "Sailing," a new work by Adam Birnbaum, commissioned by the School, will be performed along with pieces composed and arranged by the students and faculty. Jazz faculty members will join the students for several pieces in a variety of instrumental combinations.
Hoff-Barthelson's Jazz Studies Program is under the direction of jazz saxophonist Ed Palermo, a well-known performer and recording artist in the jazz world. Recently, Palermo was named to "The Daily Beast's" list of "The 40 Most Intriguing Musicians" for his work in rock repertory big band and was featured in an article in the May 2017 "JazzTimes." His most recent recording "The Great Un-American Songbook Volumes 1 & 2," a tribute to the rockers who ruled the AM and FM airwaves in the 1960s via successive waves of the British Invasion, received a rating of 4 out of 4 stars from "Downbeat" magazine. The jazz faculty includes several of the most distinguished jazz artists in the New York area.
Hoff-Barthelson incorporates private lessons, jazz ensembles and jazz improvisation, arranging and theory into its comprehensive curriculum for students of all ages. The Jazz Studies Program presents three concerts each year; students and ensembles have additional opportunities to perform during recitals and music festivals throughout the year.
