Can an orphan named Arthur, an island-bound princess named Miranda, and a magical spirit named Ariel overcome their fears to change their own destinies? Discover the answers in a magical, funny and heart-warming play created just for kids: The Tempest and The Sword in the Stone, presented by Half Moon Theatre on Saturday, November 12, at 11 am in Half Moon's Studio Theatre.
"The Tempest" is inspired by Shakespeare's play about a powerful wizard and his daughter on a desert island, while "The Sword in the Stone" is about a young boy named Arthur who becomes the King of England. These two classic tales combine magic, shipwrecks, wizards and foam swords in a delightful morning of interactive theater and storytelling. Forgiveness and self-discovery play a leading role in this exciting coming-of-age double-feature that's perfect for the young and young-at-heart!
The Tempest and The Sword in the Stone is a touring show created for young audiences by the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF). Half Moon and HVSF are partnering to increase affordable theater programming for young audiences in Dutchess County. "Children get to participate in this show. They help the actors tell the story," said Half Moon's Executive Director Molly Katz. "We think it's a perfect fit for our Studio Theatre, and we are thrilled to be working with the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival to expand opportunities for Dutchess families to enjoy high quality theater."
Founded in 2006, Half Moon Theatre (HMT) is the Hudson Valley's only year-round professional theater company. HMT brings plays and musicals from Broadway and Off-Broadway to the Mid-Hudson region and supports the development of new work by American Playwrights, composers and lyricists. The mainstage season is presented at the Marriott Pavilion on The Culinary Institute of America campus in Hyde Park, NY. HMT also operates a School of the Arts and a Studio Theatre in Poughkeepsie, NY. HMT Education cultivates a new generation of theater artists and fans through in-school residencies, theater classes, and professional training programs. The HMT Junior Company creates and performs free shows at hospitals, senior centers and community events.
