Ocean State Theatre Company ushers in the holidays with a performance of Yes, Virginia The Musical, performed by their OSTeenCo., which was created to provide an opportunity for teen actors to benefit from a professional theatre experience. Yes, Virginia The Musical, which was created by Macy's as part of its annual holiday Believe campaign will be presented for one performance only on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11:00 am.
Yes, Virginia The Musical, is based on the true story of 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon, whose curiosity about the existence of Santa Claus inspired her to write a letter to the New York Sun newspaper in 1897 and prompted one of the most famous newspaper editorials of all time. The production has been performed by hundreds of groups each holiday season since 2012, when Macy's began offering $100,000 annually in grant funds to help alleviate production costs. Ocean State Theatre Company was one of this year's recipients of a $1,000 grant.
Macy's Believe campaign, which supports Make-A-Wish, encourages children of all ages to drop their stamped letter to Santa at the big red letterbox at their local Macy's or to visit macys.com/believe to create and send a letter. For every letter received, Macy's donates $1, up to $1 million, to Make-A-Wish, helping to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. New this year, Macy's has introduced the Wish Writer interactive stylus and app to benefit Make-A-Wish and offer a fun new way for children to learn the magic of giving through interactive games and writing letters to Santa. Compatible with both Apple and Android devices, the Wish Writer stylus and app are available in approximately 600 stores across the country and on macys.com, with $1 from each sale benefitting Make-A-Wish. In addition, the Wish Writer will come to life in a heartwarming film that follows the journey of a little girl and her brother as they discover how small acts of kindness can go a long way. A Wish Writer, interactive stylus and app, donated by Macy's, will be given away in conjunction with OSTC's performance of Yes, Virginia the Musical. For more information about the Wish Writer and to view the film, visit macys.com/believe.
Directed by OSTC's Director of Educational Programming and Community Outreach, Jason Loete, with musical direction by Juan Rodriguez, and select choreography by Karen Gail Kessler, this cheerful, charming family-friendly musical features the talents of the 2015-16 OSTeenCo, which includes Connor Buonaccorsi of Cranston, Kate Fitzgerald, Abigail McMahon, Lily McMahon and Emma Senerchia, of Warwick, Alexander LeBlanc, Victoria LeBlanc and Grant Whitney of East Greenwich, Tim Fine and Alison Miccolis of North Kingstown, and a special guest appearance by OSTC's Properties Master, Christopher Lussier.
