In celebration of 85 Years of Theatre By The Sea (TBTS), owner and producer Bill Hanney is proud to announce the opening of the rousing, rollicking rock opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which will be presented from July 25 - August 12, 2018.
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was so well-received when we produced it at North Shore Music Theatre, I thought since it hadn't been done at Theatre By The Sea in nearly two decades, it was about time we bring it back," said Theatre By The Sea owner and producer Bill Hanney. "This show, which is so energetic and exhilarating, and incorporates a variety of musical styles, while recounting a familiar story, is the perfect family entertainment!"
Audiences worldwide are still in love with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 1973 hit musical based on the story in Genesis. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the fable of lost innocence, jealousy, and the power of redemption featuring an instantly recognizable score, wild costumes, imaginative sets, and high-octane, athletic choreography. We dare you not to be caught up in the infectious melodies of "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," "Go! Go! Go! Joseph," and many more. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the ultimate family show!
Directed and choreographed by Richard Sabellico, who directed previous TBTS productions of The Music Man, Buddy, and Annie, with musical direction by Ryan Edward Wise, who returns to TBTS after music directing Nunsense, the cast includes New York actor Luke Steinhauer, who will be making his Theatre By The Sea debut in the title role of Joseph. Marie Eife, who appeared at TBTS in last summer's productions of Beauty and the Beast and The Producers, is thrilled to return in the role of The Narrator. Local favorite Tom Gleadow, who audiences will remember as Mayor Shinn in The Music Man, Doc in West Side Story, the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz, Monsignor O'Hara in Sister Act, and Pickering in My Fair Lady, among others, will be portraying the roles of Jacob, Potiphar and The Baker and Michael Williams, who appeared in the National Tour of Bullets Over Broadway, will step into the role of the Pharoah. The role of Mrs. Potiphar will be played by Melissa Jones, who is currently appearing in TBTS' production of Mamma Mia! and was seen as Babette in last summer's critically acclaimed production of Beauty and the Beast. The brothers will be portrayed by David Alea, Elijah Curry, Bryan Dougherty, Fabian-Joubert Gallmeister, Maverick Hiu, Derek Hoyden, Gerard Lanzerotti, Marty Lauter, Jared Scott Miller, Matthew Pashley-Roland, Wyatt Slone. Rounding out the cast are Marlina Brown, Julia Feeley, Abby Matsusaka, Haley Ostir, and Gracie Phillips.
The creative team includes resident scenic designer Kyle Dixon and resident lighting designer Jose Santiago, along with David Costa-Cabral (Costume Design), Danny Erdberg (Sound Design), Emily Christoffersen (Wig Design), Adolpho Blaire (Associate Director/Choreographer), James O. Hansen (Production Stage Manager), and Logan Pratt (Assistant Stage Manager). Located on Rhode Island's South Shore, Theatre By The Sea celebrates 85 years of summer theatre at its best!
Theatre By The Sea has had many incarnations since opening on August 7, 1933. Tommy Brent saved the theatre from demolition in 1967 and ran it successfully until FourQuest Entertainment took over the lease in 1988. Following extensive renovations, FourQuest reopened the theatre in the spring of 1989 and continued producing high quality entertainment at the seaside playhouse until the fall of 2003. Bill Hanney purchased the property in 2007 and, with producing partners, successfully mounted a production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, just six weeks later, reopening the historic theatre on August 8, 2007. Since then, Theatre By The Sea has continued to produce a four-musical subscription season, a late-night cabaret series, a children's theatre festival, and a children's summer theatre camp.
