Play Synopsis
"I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six."
Celebrate the season with a brand-new adaptation of legendary Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' classic holiday story, A Child's Christmas in Wales. Traveling seamlessly between wistful man and wide-eyed boy, the author himself takes you on a journey back in time, where mirthful aunts and uncles, and mischievous playmates inhabit a wondrous, wintery world. Infused with traditional Welsh song and snippets of Thomas' other famous works, this Child's Christmas in Wales is a heart-warming, humor-filled treat for the entire family!
Having opened the theater's then-new space in Pawtucket in 2003 with a hugely successful run of A Child's Christmas in Wales, Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella is delighted to present his own take on this widely loved work.
"I spent a wonderful summer immersed in the sonorous, brilliant, one-of-a-kind artistry of Dylan Thomas while developing this adaptation of A Child's Christmas in Wales," Estrella said. "Thomas' legendary short story, which has been called the 'Christmas Carol of the 20th Century,' forms the spine of the work; but we've mined the rich vein of his other stories, poems and letters to allow Dylan himself to walk us back in time and, with a hard-earned and rough-hewn sentimentality, to satisfy our annual yearning to recapture that elusive perfection of the 'bright white snowball of Christmases gone.'
"Dylan was a born performer who recited many of his most-loved works for the radio and in lecture halls the world over," Estrella added. "His singular artistry demands to be heard out loud and feels nowhere more at home than when it is brought to life on stage."
