OUT LOUD Theatre is kicking off their 5th Season and 3-part series "That Way Madness Lies" with Peter Weiss's 1960's classic, Marat/Sade. Full title, The Persecution & Assassination of Jean-Paul MARAT as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade Set in 1808 in the asylum of Charenton, Marat/Sade explores mental health, revolution, and what it means to be "free". Structured almost entirely as a "play within a play" - led by the direction of the Marquis de Sade - the inmates of Charenton relive and retell the horrors of the French Revolution, all the while grappling with their own internal and external realities.
"It is mask on mask on mask," says Artistic Director, Kira Hawkridge. "We enter the space as an ensemble, all inherently dealing with and exploring our own internal and external realities - holding this piece up to our current world and our place and minds within it. It's hard not to draw correlation's between the themes so boldly put forward, to what we are all individually and often collectively experiencing in our current political climate. We then must dive in deeper to interface with the patient inside of this asylum, exploring their internal and external realities as dictated by our imaginations and what threads the script offers us to tug on and unravel. With these flexible and evolving layers in place, Weiss then asks us to dive even deeper into this world, allowing for the patients exploration of their own set of characters and historical figures that they are asked to portray and uphold - holding their world up to the history they are reliving and how they fit and feel within the context of the very words they have rehearsed. Where does the patient end and the character begin? What is the journey of these masks blurring together to become one frequency operating all at once - flashing before us so quickly that it seems as if there is no difference at all?"
Marat/Sade opens March 10, 2017 and runs through April 2, 2017 at the Mathewson Street Theater in downtown Providence. Tickets are $20.00 and are extremely limited. Available online and at the door. Questions can be directed to
