The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) starts the new year with Curt Columbus' critically acclaimed translation of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. Columbus, artistic director for Providence's Trinity Repertory Company, also directs this classic world drama.
Uncle Vanya runs from January 18-February 18 at The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St., Pawtucket, RI. Tickets are $44, $52 and $60; preview performances (January 18-21) are $33. Call 401-723-4266 or order online at gammtheatre.org.
Columbus' translation promises to give audiences a fresh, exhilarating, up-close encounter with a masterpiece that theater lovers must see, said Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella.
"One of the early, defining productions of our 15 seasons in Pawtucket was Curt's stunning adaptation of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment in 2005. It has been more than 20 years since Anton Chekhov's brilliance has graced the Gamm stage. So our second collaboration with Curt is long overdue," Estrella said. Uncle Vanya is a tragicomic masterpiece, unparalleled classic of modern drama and, in Curt's stunning translation, truly a play for today. Society is turned on its head, the environment is deteriorating rapidly and yet we must carry on. Chekhov's work resonates as strongly as ever in Curt's clear-eyed, nuanced and marrow-deep translation. We couldn't be luckier that he is directing the production, as well. Welcome back, Curt."
On an over-crowded country estate, a retired art professor, his second wife, and the daughter and brother-in-law from his first marriage navigate mid-life crises, unrequited love, a last-minute murder plot...and each other. Delusion and despair compete with humor and hope in Chekhov's beloved story about what is and what might have been. The Gamm is delighted to bring Trinity Rep Artistic Director Curt Columbus' splendid interpretation of this timeless tragicomedy to our audiences.
"Columbus's excellent, deft translation retains the dark comedy and flavor of Chekhov, while making it easily accessible to modern audiences....This Uncle Vanya is enormously entertaining." Windy City Times This production is sponsored in part by a generous donation from Ronald and Heather Florence.
