Gamm Opens 2018 With Columbus' Translation Of UNCLE VANYA

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) starts the new year with Curt Columbus' critically acclaimed translation of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. Columbus, artistic director for Providence's Trinity Repertory Company, also directs this classic world drama.

Columbus' translation promises to give audiences a fresh, exhilarating, up-close encounter with a masterpiece that theater lovers must see, said Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella.

"One of the early, defining productions of our 15 seasons in Pawtucket was Curt's stunning adaptation of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment in 2005. It has been more than 20 years since Anton Chekhov's brilliance has graced the Gamm stage. So our second collaboration with Curt is long overdue," Estrella said. Uncle Vanya is a tragicomic masterpiece, unparalleled classic of modern drama and, in Curt's stunning translation, truly a play for today. Society is turned on its head, the environment is deteriorating rapidly and yet we must carry on. On an over-crowded country estate, a retired art professor, his second wife, and the daughter and brother-in-law from his first marriage navigate mid-life crises, unrequited love, a last-minute murder plot...and each other. Delusion and despair compete with humor and hope in Chekhov's beloved story about what is and what might have been.
