The company always features three mainstage productions in the summer. This year the season features The Fantasticks, a musical, Rumors, a comedy, and Slamming Doors, a full-length improvised farce.
"The Fantasticks is a classic musical, led by the team from last fall's production of Sweeney Todd," says Communications Director Maggie Cady. "It's the longest running musical is off-Broadway history, and we're sure that audiences are going to love our version with a little CTC flair!"
Following a pair of young, star-crossed lovers, The Fantasticks beautifully tells a tale of love in the moonlight, and in the harsh light of day.
Rumors was the first play that the Contemporary Theater Company undertook in 2005, and now the company is returning to it 11 years later.
"Rumors is as hilarious as they come," says Cady, who is directing the production. "We are having a blast with all the physical humor and fun energy!"
Combining the company's penchant for farce with its booming improv scene, Slamming Doors features some of the company's best improvisers in a fast-paced comedy made up on-the-spot each night.
"Slamming Doors marks our company's latest step towards producing cutting-edge sophisticated improvised theater," says Artistic Director Chris Simpson.
Behind the theater on the new Charles Errol Exley Performance Patio, the theater is presenting Shakespeare on the Saugatucket, a series of free Shakespeare performances throughout the summer on Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 7 pm. In July, Comedy of Errors features hilarious mistaken identities that unravel as twins separated at birth are reunited. In August, Antony and Cleopatra follows the tumultuous love of Mark Antony and Cleopatra through war and tragedy.
In addition to the mainstage productions, the theater is also presenting two family shows on Saturday Mornings at 10:30 am, The Emperor's New Clothes in July and Jenny vs. the Pirates in August.
