Review: THE HITCHCOCK HOTEL at The Can Can
by Jay Irwin - October 05, 2023 Dear Readers, it struck me last night, while watching The Can Can’s current production of “The Hitchcock Hotel” of the intersection of horror, humor and sex. Any horror movie fan knows that a good laugh is the perfect way to release that tension after a good scare. And sex certainly plays a part in horror, not only that any good horror movie killer is going after the teens fooling around, but also consider those fun, spooky, and sexy icons such as Lily Munster, Morticia Addams, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, or anyone in The Rocky Horror Show. So, the Can Can’s horror burlesque fits right in there, dancing that line of spooky, fun, and sexy. And while I don’t think anyone will be terrified at their fright fest, they’ll certainly laugh while being titillated.

Review: DISNEY'S THE LITTLE MERMAID at The 5th Avenue Theatre
by Jay Irwin - September 16, 2023 In these tumultuous theatrical times, it’s of little surprise that The 5th Avenue Theatre would head back under the sea with a remount of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid”. I mean, they just did it back in 2016. But it’s a crowd pleaser and I suspect a bit of a cash sea cow so here we are.

Review: CARDIAC ORGAN: A GOTH CABARET at Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble

Review: UNTITLED, 2023/CORYBANTIC GAMES/ANASTASIA ACT III, Royal Opera House
by Vikki Jane Vile - June 11, 2023 Perhaps it’s already clear, but this is a rather subdued triple bill to bring the 22/23 season to a close. Earnest in tone and at times devastating in appeal.

Review: THIS IS HALLOWEEN at The Can Can
by Jay Irwin - October 15, 2022 The Can Can, Seattle’s fabulous burlesque house, celebrates the 15th anniversary of their collaboration with The Triple Door by bringing back their ode to Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” with their tantalizing “This Is Halloween”. And while this naughty nightmare has much of what you’d want from a Can Can show, one aspect continued to be quite frustrating, at least for me. Clarity.

BWW Review: SACRE BY CIRCA – ASTOUNDING AUSTRALIAN ARTISTRY at The Broad Stage
by Valerie-Jean Miller - February 13, 2022 Presented Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Broad Stage, in Santa Monica, CA., created by Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa ensemble with new music by Philippe Bachman alongside Stravinsky‘s Rite of Spring; Circa Contemporary Circus is a unique troupe of artists that will mesmerize you from the very beginning. The company consists of powerful world-class acrobatics and dynamic performers, rich in dance, acrobatic and aerial technique. Also, plenty of emotional interpretation by the use of their bodies. As mentioned in the program, there is no storyline per se to this piece, it is a dual orchestration combining a new work and a famous classic composition to form more of something that takes the audience in and lets them interpret what they see in the moment.
