David Harrower's acclaimed script Blackbird, was commissioned for the Edinburgh International Festival of 2005. It went on to London's West End (Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play 2007), and two New York productions (the most recent of which received three Tony nominations). Described bluntly, Blackbird is the confrontation between a woman (Una) and the man (Ray) who sexually abused her when she was twelve. Harrower somehow manages to make this story not only compelling, but achingly human. Both characters revisit their past (not entirely willingly) because this event, this “relationship” has so completely crafted who they are that they simply have to face it, and each other.
