Set on the bare stage of a Broadway theater, A CHORUS LINE is centered on 17 dancers auditioning for spots in a Broadway musical ensemble. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer, as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. The passion of the piece came from director/choreographer Michael Bennett’s desire to make these dancers represent the thousands upon thousands of “gypsies,” an old term for Broadway chorus dancers, over the years who sublimated their own careers to support the star. The show captures the dreams of anyone who ever wanted — needed — to make it, to prove their worth, to put themselves, like the two dozen dancers, on the line with grit and self-determination.
An unprecedented box office and critical hit, the musical became one of the most beloved shows of all time, received 12 Tony Award nominations and won 9, and won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It became the longest running show in Broadway history until 2011.
Honest Pint's production brings it back to its original roots: A group of theatre artists, gathered in a small rehearsal/audition room, telling their stories and dancing for their lives. No glitzy set or backdrop, no orchestra, but simply the piano accompanist that would be present in any audition situation for actors. Acoustic, immediate, visceral, challenging to the senses.
