On the heels of their critically acclaimed musical, The Light in the Piazza, Theatre Raleigh steps up to the plate with their next selection- the southern classic, Steel Magnolias from July 27 - August 7 at the Kennedy Theatre.

Concerned with a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor and filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions; the play is alternately hilarious and touching-and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.

Tickets are $30.00 adults and $28.00 senior/student/military and are available at http://www.theatreraleigh.com. Group rates available by calling the box office - 919-832-9997.

Truvy Jones (AC Donahue) runs a successful beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" in the neighborhood have standing Saturday appointments. Along with her anxious and eager assistant, Annelle (Morgan Parpan), Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town: wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin, Clairee Belcher (Susan Russell*), local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux (Pamela Dunlap*), intelligent and compassionate career woman M'Lynn (Robyne Parrish*), and her daughter Shelby (Shannon McCarren), the prettiest girl in town. Shelby's engagement is the talk of the town, but the joy and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health complications. Eventually, when Shelby dies from complications related to her diabetes, M'Lynn has to deal with the most difficult of life's challenges: the loss of one's only child. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on their underlying strength-and love. As the women of Chinquapin make their ways over life's many hurdles together, they find comfort in one another.
