Theatre In The Park closes its 2014 season with the world premiere of Raleigh playwright, Adrienne Earle Pender's Somewhere In Between.
The play focuses on McKenna - a young woman who, with the recent passing of her husband, finds herself on an emotional journey as friends and family pull her in different directions. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered life, it is the arrival of a stranger with a secret who McKenna seems to be able to connect with the most. Twists are turned and shocking secrets are revealed as McKenna discovers the truth lies somewhere in between.
Somewhere In Between explores grief, race, sexuality, marriage, but most importantly - love. "I think the ultimate reason why I wrote the play was to examine the nature of love," says playwright Adrienne Earle Pender. "Everyone provides love the way they know how, and if you love someone, shouldn't you accept love as it is given to you? If you try to change that in someone, is that love?"
Theatre In The Park has assembled an all-female production team for Somewhere In Between, including director, Maggie Rasnick, Scenic Designer, Carol Winstead Wood, and Stage Manager, Christine Rapp. "This is something that was very important to me," says Pender. "As an African-American woman, I want to make sure those who may not be fully represented have a strong voice. With the production team and the cast, we have a diverse ensemble - African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Caucasians, gay and straight - and I couldn't be more thrilled!"
Among that diversity, Somewhere In Between features Page Purgar as McKenna. Page was last seen at Theatre In The Park in Fuddy Meers, where she was honored by the Independent Weekly as one of Best Lead Actresses for 2013. Byron Jennings II plays Andrew, the man who pays McKenna a visit. Hazel Edmond, Brenda Lo, and Chris Milner make their Theatre In The Park debuts as McKenna's sister-in-law, best friend, and brother respectively.
Somewhere In Between opens September 12. Theatregoers are urged to make reservations well in advance of its opening night.
