In the 30th year of Teens On Stage / Teens Backstage, RLT's summer conservatory presents the musical "Runaways." This groundbreaking devised piece highlights the decision-making process and varied reasons children decide to run away while exploring the substitutes they find to deal with the loss of family. Written by Elizabeth Swados based on interviews she conducted with homeless teens, the initial Off-Broadway and Broadway runs culminated in five Tony nominations and one Obie won for Best Direction in 1978.
The play is directed by RLT's Youth Theatre and Education Director, Linda O'Day Young. "Although Runaways is a period piece from 1978, the problems of teen homelessness; the fear, the danger, the isolation and abuse still exist today. Teen runaways are out there, they are just not easy to notice. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Haven House Services to raise awareness with our production," said Young.
Haven House Services was founded in 1973 to provide community-based services to at-risk youth and their families in Wake County. During the rehearsal process, actors from "Runaways" will visit Haven House to meet with staff and clients and learn about issues that affect homeless teens today. A talkback after the performance at 5pm on Saturday, July 25, will be facilitated by Haven House Services staff. Audience members will be invited to participate in a drive for items that are needed by homeless teens.
"Runaways" runs July 17-26 and is recommended for ages 13 and up. The opening night performance will be ASL interpreted, and the second Sunday performance (July 26 at 5pm) will be audio described. Tickets for all events at RLT can be purchased by calling the box office (919)-821-3111, Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00 p.m., or by visiting the theatre's website at www.raleighlittletheatre.org. This project is funded in part by the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission.
