"I chose to set the play in 1945 post-World War II because the gender politics of the era match those in the world of Shakespeare's story, especially in consideration of Beatrice's character. She is a woman who is shocking in her assertiveness and unconventional attitudes towards love. It's easy to imagine she went to work during the war and felt threatened by the return of the soldiers," said Torres.
The production features Katherine Barron as Beatrice in her RLT debut and Lucius Robinson as Benedick. Mr. Robinson is also a teacher in the theater's Youth Education Program.
RLT will announce the 2015-16 season on Thursday, February 12. This will be the first full season with Mr. Torres at the helm, and the first that he has planned.
