The affluent, African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha's Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents. As the two newcomers butt heads over issues of race and privilege, longstanding tensions bubble under the surface and reach a boiling point when secrets are revealed. "Stick Fly" is directed by Karen Dacons-Brock, who last directed "Caroline, or Change" at RLT in 2014.
"I am excited about the characters, their personal patterns, projections, and approaches to life that are shaped by their individual perspectives. These perspectives result largely from familiar family dynamics along with historical and present racism, classism, sexism, and even more "isms." I see imperfect lives colliding, spilling, retrieving, and then graciously forging head. Sometimes their encounters are amusing and comical, other times causing serious reflection, at all times immensely entertaining," says Dacons-Brock.
A preview performance and discussion will be held at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham on Wednesday, January 6 at 7:30pm. The discussion will be led by Dacons-Brock, Akiva Fox (dramaturg) and will feature additional scholars from North Carolina Central University.
"Stick Fly" runs January 15-31, 2016, in the Gaddy-Goodwin Theatre at Raleigh Little Theatre. The production sponsor for "Stick Fly" is Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, and the media sponsor is the Triangle Tribune.
