The music of Once has always been it's driving force, and our production will place that music front and center. Twelve talented actors play their own instruments right in front of the audience's eyes, replacing the usual offstage orchestra with a full complement of guitars, fiddles, accordions (and more!)- it's an incredibly engaging musical experience.
As a director, I've always been drawn to the show's exploration of love's redemptive power, as well as the idea that split-second decisions can often have a profound, lasting effect on the rest of our lives -both are themes that carry throughout Once and move audiences like few other American musicals ever have.
Our production will stage this show in a uniquely intimate and surprising way, something for which Theatre Raleigh has become widely known.
>From the moment you walk into the theater, it will be clear that this is anything but your typical musical, and I can't wait for our audience to experience what we have in store for them. - Tim Seib, Director
Guy (Dave Toole) is an Irish singer and songwriter who spends his days fixing vacuums in the Dublin shop he runs with his father, and his nights playing his music in local pubs. He is on the verge of giving up music altogether when a Czech immigrant, "Girl," (Morgan Parpan) walks into the bar, hears him play and refuses to let him abandon his guitar. Over the course of a week, Girl convinces Guy to believe in the power of his music and his love for the woman who inspired his songs. Their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a love story.
