Yes, it's true. Hot Summer Nights knows a thing or two about the dog days of summer. Not only is the professional summer theatre company opening their fifth season with A.R. Gurney's comedy Sylvia, but wearing the collar in the title role is Broadway funny lady Lisa Jolley (Hairspray).

Sylvia tells the tale of Greg and Kate, who have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park or that has found him bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. The smart talking Lab and Poodle mix becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

Making his directorial debut, Tony Award© nominated actor Alan Campbell (Sunset Boulevard, Contact) is ready for the challenge; and no doubt with good company by his side. In addition to Jolley, the cast also includes Robbie Gay (Tom/Phyllis/Leslie), Adam Twiss (Greg) and Cassandra Vallery (Kate). Campbell says he's looking forward to the challenge of directing, but having such a talented cast and crew makes it all worthwhile.

"It's wonderful to be able to have a hand in every aspect in the creation of a show. Thrilling and scary but ultimately enormously satisfying", says Campbell.

Behind the scenes is Campbell's production team: Kristin Grieneisen (Production Stage Manager), Curtis Jones (Technical Director/Lighting Designer), Phil Valera (Sound Designer), Leanne Heintz (Props Mistress/Sound Technician) and Casey Watkins (Costume Designer).

In addition to providing inspiring theatre in year five, Hot Summer Nights is also doing their part to give back during these tough economic times. The theatre company has not only lowered their ticket prices to be more recession-friendly but also in an effort to help displaced pets; they will donate a portion of the proceeds from their Sunday, June 21st matinee of Sylvia to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wake County.

"The SPCA of Wake County would like to thank the Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy series for their support," said Carole Smith, SPCA Development Director. "We are seeing an increase in the number of animals we serve, while resources decrease, and we appreciate the opportunity to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless pets of our community."

Sylvia opens the summer season at the Kennedy Theatre on June 17th. The show runs through June 28th with Wednesday through Saturday performances at 8 PM and Sunday matinees at 3 PM.
