High School in the Spotlight: Garner Magnet High, NC

In this week's edition of 'School in the Spotlight', BWW is thrilled to feature the Drama Department at Garner Magnet High School in Garner, North Carolina!

The Drama Department at Garner Magnet High School offers a wide range of theater arts courses as well as performance and technical opportunities for students. Read up on the classes offered below, and scroll down for photos from past productions!

Theatre Arts I - This is a course that will build new skills of the students. During the course students learn the begining basics in the theatre world. Students use the skills learned in further classes as well. Taught by Mr. Kirt Landry.

Theatre Arts II - This is a course that will build on skills previously learned by students in Theatre Arts I. Students are a part of the MYP Program and keep a developmental notebook to map their progress through the semester. The course consists of improvisation, pantomime, monologues, dialogues and a one act which they write in collaboration with their group members which includes light cues, sound cues, costumes and performance. Taught by Mrs. Cheryle Prater.

Theatre Arts III (Honors) - This is a higher level class which is a based on performance. The students are required to audition in order to be placed in the class. The class is responsible for the technical aspects such as lighting, costumes, assistant director and actors as well. The Drama III play is performed two nights with all proceeds going to the Relay for Life. Taught by Mrs. Cheryle Prater.

Theatre Arts IV (Honors)- This is an in depth course on directing skills where the student learns about blocking, characterization, costuming, props, and sets. With an audition open to the school, the students pick their cast and work for six weeks to perform two nights of one acts. Taught by Mrs. Cheryle Prater

International Baccalaurate Theatre - This is a two year course which involves researching, study of world cultures theatre, practical performance, theatre production, theatre performance & the independent project portfolio. College credit can be earned through the Diploma Program.Taught by Mrs. Cheryle Prater.

Technical Theatre - This is a hands on entry level class that deals with the backstage and technical aspects of theatre. This class primarily deals with the lights, sound, and scenery of the stage.Taught by Mr. Kirt Landry.

As its Spring Musical, Garner High will present GREASE from March 21-23 in the GMSH Auditorium. The cast is led by Carter Allison (Danny Zuko), Erica Eason (Sandy Dumbrowski), Leia Gearhart (Betty Rizzo), Rachel Hardin (Frenchy) and Alex Yamamoto (Kenickie). Other upcoming events include the Student-directed One Act Plays on March 27 and the Student and Faculty Variety Show on April 25
