Elizabeth Southard and Gary Mauer will bring Broadway Bliss to GPAC on Dec. 13.
The sparks were real when Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard took the Broadway stage as the Phantom and Christine in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. Their electricity on stage was genuine.
The husband and wife met while working on a cruise ship, playing a pair of newlyweds in New York Honeymoon. They later married.
Mauer has played both the Phantom and Raoul opposite Southard and they were cast together as Gaylord Ravenal and Magnolia Hawks in Harold Prince's Showboat.
Mauer and Southard will bring their chemistry to the Garner Performing Arts Center for a one-night only presentation of "Broadway Bliss." The concert kicks off the fifth annual Broadway Voices series.
The Broadway Voices series brings some of Broadway's top stars to GPAC. A year ago, Norm Lewis, currently Broadway's Phantom, went from his appearances on the television show "Scandal," to GPAC and then on to the Broadway lead.
This year's lineup has Mauer and Southard in their blissful performance on Saturday, Dec. 13; Newsies, Godspell and The Civil War star Capathia Jenkins Saturday, January 31 and Wicked Glinda Alli Mauzey on Friday, March 6.
Mauer and Southard's work on stage was praised from coast to coast.
"People sense an added chemistry between Beth and me. There is a familiarity that I suppose goes over the orchestra pit," Mauer told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Because we trust each other, that allows us to take that extra performance energy."
"There's that history we have that you can't really hide. There's an intimacy that you can't manufacture," Southard says.
Mauer recently returned from a performance before 24,000 in Taipei City, Taiwan. He has appeared in concert with symphonies around the world with former Broadway Voices performers Stephanie J. Block, Susan Egan, Craig Schulman, Ron Bohmer, Christiane Noll and J. Mark McVey.
