Cape Fear Regional Theatre Presents THE CAKE Featuring Writer Talk Back Image

CAPE FEAR REGIONAL THEATRE is bringing the deliciously southern play "THE CAKE" to it's stage April 4-21. Written by Bekah Brunstetter, Supervising Producer of NBC's hit show "THIS IS US", this timely comedy comes to CFRT after successful runs throughout the country, including making its regional premier at Brunstetter's alma matter UNC-Chapel Hill (PlayMakers Repertory Company). CFRT will present the show just a few days after the highly acclaimed Off-Broadway run at the Manhattan Theatre Club closes. CFRT is among some of the first regional theatres to produce "THE CAKE", proving its place as one of North Carolina's premiere theatres.

The show tells the story of Della (Libby McNeill Seymour), a NC-based baker who makes cakes, not decisions-the leaves that to her husband Tim (Greg King). When Jen (Jessica Giannone), the daughter of her deceased best friend, comes home and asks her to bake her wedding cake, Della is thrilled, but when she learns that the "lucky guy" is a "lucky woman" Macy (Olivia London), Della is left to make one of the hardest decisions in her life: to bake the wedding cake or not. David Hemsley Caldwell directs this performance. Not only are there cakes all over the stage, the audience will get to indulge in a slice of cake after each performance. The sweets are provided by local bakery The Sweet Palette.

On Wednesday, April 10, Bekah Brunstetter will be attending the 7:30pm Military Appreciation Night performance. There will be a talk-back to follow. In a July 2017 interview with the New York Times, Brunstetter, who hails from Winston-Salem, NC said, "The Della's of the world are wonderful, loving people. I want Jen and Macy to be full human beings, and I want us to root for their love. But there are lots of plays and movies about Jen and Macy. There really aren't very many about Della."

"THE CAKE" has previews on Thursday, April 4th and Friday, April 5th, and opens Saturday, April 6th at 7:30pm. The performance schedule is Wednesday though Friday at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 7:30pm, and 2:00pm on Sundays. Tickets are $25 (preview performances are $15). As a Blue Star Theater, CFRT offers Military Discounts for all performances and hosts two Military Appreciation Nights (April 10). The show runs through April 21st.
