Alongside the coronation opera La clemenza di Tito, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) is Mozart’s final stage work. In it, the composer returned to the form of singspiel: an opera with spoken dialogue. The libretto was written by the German playwright, actor and singer Emanuel Schikaneder, with whose theatre troupe, performing at the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, Mozart was in friendly contact. Soon after its premiere in September 1791, Die Zauberflöte became a colossal hit. This fantasy opera blends fairy-tale and comic elements with wise philosophy and the symbolism of the mysterious Masonic Order, of which Mozart himself was a member. Let yourselves be carried away by the love story of Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina, who overcome all the obstacles and pass all tests on their path towards common happiness.
