All of you know her name, but be honest: When was the last time you actually read something by her? The femme fatale of Czech revivalist society, mother of four children, author of short stories and novellas, collector of folk literature, a woman who surpassed her time. She was appropriated by the ideologues of Communist propaganda, she served as the subject for a number of films and literary works. Today, however, we are mainly excited about Božena N?mcová’s personal life. Lenka Lagronová, one of the most acclaimed Czech playwrights, strives to view N?mcová through a contemporary lens, regarding her as an extraordinary artist, albeit one complex in many respects. Her play is not one focusing on the biography of a long-dead writer; instead it presents a story about someone who may well be living in the here and now. Lagronová penned her text directly for the National Theatre.
