A cripple in politics - crippled politics. Afflicted by a lust for power, endowed with intellect, charm and capable of anything, Richard III is one of the Shakespearean heroes embodying realpolitik. Richard III is now playing at the Estates Theatre thru May 2010.
Although, according to historical sources, Richard III was no worse a monster than the majority of rulers of his time, Shakespeare imbued him with almost diabolical traits and in so doing once and for all connected unscrupulous pursuit with the image of a deformed human being. Richard III is rightly considered Shakespeare's greatest historical tragedy.
