The tragic story of a mother of two sons and a mentally ill daughter takes place in 1950s Reykjavik. It depicts a family drama with the dimensions of an Antique tragedy in which violence, abuse and alcoholism are juxtaposed with the peculiar fragile beauty of a poetry originating at the boundary of madness and hope for a better future of those the tragic heroine cares for. 'A Day of Hope' plays now through May 13 at the Kolowrat Theatre.
The story of a middle-aged widow fighting for her sick daughter and her relationship with her two sons is simultaneously both real and unreal. The harsh Nordic environment and the tense 1950s create a strange backdrop to a moving story with an unusual feeling of catharsis in its tragic denouement. A Day of Hope is amongst the very best to have originated in Icelandic, as well as Nordic, theatre over the past two decades. The author is one of Iceland's foremost poets and playwrights.
A co-production project of the National Theatre Drama and the City Theatre Reykjavik
