Times are hard. Money is tight. What can Tin Pan Alley Theatre Company offer? Well, free sex and one hot musical night. That is right - Tin Pan Alley is making Portland Theater history by offering the Northwest premiere of the riotous 1997 Tony nominated Broadway musical, Triumph of Love absolutely FREE! There is a strong need for entertainment these days that does not break the bank.
Triumph of Love is the story of a beautiful young princess who will do anything for love, like lie about her past, give up her career and ... throw off all her clothes and disguise herself as a man in order to infiltrate the guarded "men-only" compound of an exiled prince she has longed for from afar, who is secretly plotting to murder her and usurp her throne. Such is the state of things in James Magruder, Jeffrey Stock and Susan Birkenhead's hilarious adaptation of Marivaux's French Restoration cross-dressing sex romp.
The musical stars Olympia native Audrey Voon as the princess, and features TPA artistic director David Ruben, Portland actor Christopher Mullens, and Chicago based guest artists Maia Diaz, Neil Stratman, Melina Rey and Tony Lopez (fresh from the national tour of The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee.) The musical will be directed by Scott Susong (head of the prestigious musical theater program at Illinois Wesleyan University), with music direction by Natalie Boccumini and choreography by Mr. Ruben.
"It's a simple idea, but one that we have strong faith in," says Ruben. "I have seen half a dozen of our finest American theatre companies close down right in front of our eyes this season, all in light of our recent economic demands. It's time to take a daring step. Perhaps the solution is to paint with bolder strokes so we can bring musicals back to their purist form - entertainment! Tin Pan Alley dedicates Triumph of Love to the average person who is ready to have some fun this summer." The company hopes to continue offering free musical theatre in the future by requesting donations on behalf of the theatre company on their website and each performance.
All performances held at the Artists Repertory Morrison Street Theater at 1515 SW Morrison Street. Good thing the theater is delightfully air-conditioned; a play this hot is going to need it!
