Young anarchists try to bring down the Establishment. The police try to stop them. Push to the left, push to the right. Push far enough and you'll be surprised who you meet.
Based on real events in 1970s Britain, The Angry Brigade is part police procedural, part comedy of manners, part documentary, part thriller, part social satire. Graham uncovers people behind ideologies, and a moment in history that resonates today.
James Graham is an award-winning playwright, film and television writer. His play This House premiered at London's Cottesloe Theatre in September 2012, directed by Jeremy Herrin, and transferred to the Olivier in 2013 where it enjoyed sell-out runs with critical acclaim and admiration from current and former MPs for his rendition of life in the Commons. It was broadcast internationally by National Theatre Live and received nominations for the Evening Standard and Olivier Best Play awards.
Graham's more recent work includes Privacy created with Josie Rourke for the Donmar Warehouse and receiving its New York premiere at The Public Theater in July 2016, starring Daniel Radcliffe. Graham's play Monster Raving Loony opened at the Theatre Royal Plymouth this year and transferred to Soho Theatre in May 2016. The Vote at the Donmar Warehouse aired in real time on TV in the final 90 minutes of the 2015 polling day and was nominated for a BAFTA. His Channel 4 drama Coalition also aired during the election and won the Royal Television Society award for Best Single Drama. Graham has written the book for Finding Neverland with music by Gary Barlow. It opened on Broadway in April 2015. He remains a Writer in Residence at the Finborough Theatre.
Graham's feature film X + Y opened in Spring 2015 after being selected for the Toronto International and London Film Festivals, winning the Writer's Guild Award for Best First Screenplay. It starred Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins & Eddie Marsan. He is currently working on a cinematic adaptation of 1984 for director Paul Greengrass.
Playwright James Graham grants considerable leeway in the presentation of The Angry Brigade's two acts - present them as published, reverse the order, run them on one night, produce them on consecutive nights. In this spirit, Company Members Isaac Lamb and Rebecca Lingafelter take an unexpected approach to sharing directorial duties for Third Rail's production.Four actors, 15 characters. Cramped basement offices transform into a counterculture flop house. Bombs flash, walls crumble. From the sets to the costumes to the sound design, The Angry Brigade audiences will experience one of the most theatrical productions in Third Rail's 11-year history.
Save the Date for The Doctors are In. On April 9, Resident Dramaturgs Brian Myers and Ellen Walkley will host guest panelists for a discussion and Q. and A. on The Angry Brigade. Details to be announced.
