SALT is a multimedia presentation of 10 installations exploring the idea of civil disobedience, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's Salt March speech and the effect his words had on a multitude of people.
Audiences will be free to wander around STT's warehouse and observe the installations which will be placed around a central artwork created from salt. Installations will be a mix of live, ongoing, repetitive action, film, or static visual art. Shaking the Tree's Artistic Director, Samantha Van Der Merwe will orchestrate the experience, and flow of the evening, working with each individual artist/artist pair to best express their final vision.

Shaking the Tree has committed to four years of programming (one event per year) in direct response to a Trump presidency and its implications of hate, exclusion, bigotry, and fear. Each year's act of resistance will seek to incorporate voices from communities who are threatened to become disenfranchised under the Trump regime. Including but not limited to: Women, People of Color, members of the LGBTQ community, Latinos, Muslims, Immigrants, Refugees, and Environmentalists.
Shaking the Tree Theatre seeks to meld the boundaries of theatre and visual art by presenting audiences with thrilling and immersive theatrical experiences. Founded in 2003, Shaking the Tree uses innovative ways to inhabit the space, creating a heightened surrounding that allows audiences to experience a deeper, more active connection to the work.
Shaking the Tree Studio is a laboratory for tomorrow's theatre-makers. By using the same principles we hold dear for play-making, we seek to provide students with rich and varied literature, allow them to explore it through immersion, and witness them experience a deeper connection of thought, feeling, and action, as a result.
